Boasting more than 10,000 years of history and 11 sites on the UNESCO World Heritage list, the visitor is spoilt for choice when it comes to Cyprus.

From mosaics to ancient tombs, Paphos offers a wealth of interesting sites for the culture buff to explore.

Discover Colourful Mosaics at the Paphos Archaeological Park

With its entrance at the harbour, the UNESCO-listed Archaeological Park is hard not to miss. It houses the most amazing third-century mosaic floors in the Houses of Dionysus, Theseus and Aion, and the Odeon, a second century Roman theatre.

Descend into the Burial Chambers at the Tomb of the Kings

A short drive away is the 4th century Tombs of the Kings, a vast complex of burial chambers dating from the fourth century. Descend into the caverns to explore further and go early in summer when it is cooler and quieter.

Climb up Paphos Medieval Fort for Fabulous Views

Built in the Byzantine period to protect the harbour, it has been rebuilt several times during its long history as a Roman castle, a feudal castle, Turkish tower and even a British salt warehouse. It’s worth explore the fort if only for the spectacular views of the resort and harbour.

Swim Around Aphrodite’s Rock to Guarantee Eternal Youth

Situated half way between Paphos and Limassol, this spot is where legend has it that Aphrodite rose from the waves. It is worth stopping off for a look at the rock or perhaps a swim and sun bathe on the beach. Those who swim around the magnificent rock are guaranteed eternal youth.

Enjoy Theatre at Kourion Ancient Amphitheatre

Stand at the centre of the Greco-Roman amphitheatre, built in the 2nd century BC, and listen to the echo of your voice as it reverberates around this largely intact amphitheatre overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Explore the ruins of the ancient Greek temples and the House of Achilles with its fine mosaics. Concerts are held here throughout the year.

Kilossi Castle was the Home of the Knights of St John

This 13th century with its walls three meters thick was used by the Knights of St. John and rebuilt in the 15th century.

Fall in Love with Aphrodite in Polis

Visit the Baths of Aphrodite and see where the Goddess of Love is reputed to have entertained her various lovers.

Ancient Larnaca Boasts Pink Flamingos and Hala Tekke Mosque

Once the site of a Mycenean city and home of Zeno, the founder of the Stoic school of philosophy.

Visit the amazing Hala Tekke Mosque, situated on the edge of the salt lake. The view of the mosque and pink flamingos feeding in the lake is astounding. It was built in 1816 over the tomb of Umm Haram, allegedly a relative of the Prophet Mohammed who died on the spot in 649.

Follow in the Footsteps of Aphrodite on a Cultural Route

The first thematic route to open in Cyprus follows in the footsteps of the goddess at the main archaeological sites associated with her. These are Kouklia, Amathounta and Kition. Information centres are situated there and sites are sign-posted. Brochures are available at all Cyprus Tourism Organisation offices. Individuals can either follow the route using their own mode of transport, or take an excursion.
