From the golden sands of Coral Bay to the remote turtle breeding grounds of Lara Bay, these beaches are ones you must not miss during your holiday
Although Cyprus is not know for its sandy beaches, there are some real pearls to discover providing you know where to look. Unspoilt Lara Bay is Loggerhead Turtles' Breeding Ground Why? This golden sandy bay in the protected Akamas national park is one of the most unspoilt thanks to its remoteness and regulations restricting public access. They have been introduced to protect the green and Loggerhead turtles which return here each year to lay their eggs at night from mid June to September. Once the eggs are laid, cages are placed around them – a move which has seen the survival rate rise from 2 per cent in 1978 to 90 per cent (3,000 hatchlings) today. The public is also banned from using beach umbrellas and encouraged to stay for only a short while. Who goes?
Coral Bay has the Best Sandy Beach on the West Coast of CyprusWhy? Coral Bay is undoubtedly the best beaches on the west coast, with one of the longest and finest stretches of golden sand. Its shelving sands are safe and the sea clear and amazingly warm. There are plenty of water-sports or boat trips for those who don’t want to get their feet wet. Wide-scale villa and hotel development nearby means that the beach is busy at peak times. Out of the main season, it is quieter. The huge Coral Bay Hotel & Beach Resort has beach access, while the butler-service Thalass is situated on a headline overlooking the bay with steps down to the beach. Seven kilometres north is Agios Georgios beach, which is small but picturesque with its fishing harbour and cliff-top church overlooking the bay. Who goes?
Shelving Sands and Crystal Sea Make Nissi Beach Great for KidsWhy? The soft golden sands, which gently shelve into the most amazing crystal clear turquoise waters, are safe and ideal for children. Its dazzling blue waters are amazing. Those seeking more of an adrenalin rush headed for bungee jumping at the edge of Nissi bay. It’s a great place to chill out but tends to get very crowded even in summer, so don’t expect peace and quiet. It is close to the town centre, which is littered with bars, discos and clubs, and the attractive harbour with family-run restaurants and attractive promenade. Who Goes?
Great Watersports and Golden Sands at Fig Tree Bay in ProtarasWhy? For its attractive bay, water-sports and golden sands, which gently shelve into the clear seawaters, making it ideal for families with young children. The view of Fig Tree Bay with its colourful umbrellas is stunning. There are plenty of cafes and tavernas for those who want a break from the sun. Unfortunately, it is packed with sunbathers at peak times and each square centimetre of beach space is worth its weight in golden suntan oil. Who goes?
