There is more to Cyprus than big, brash resorts. Discover Blue Flag Pissoui, sandy Coral Bay and authentic villages that are off-the-beaten-track.

Quieter than nearby Paphos, Coral Bay still retains a resort feel with a good selection of restaurants and bars and shelving beach of dark sand, one of the few sandy beaches in the area.

Discover Sandy Beaches and Nature at Coral Bay

The new butler-service Thalassa Hotel and its sister Coral Bay Hotel and Resort dominate the waterfront from which the views of golden cliffs and sunsets are spectacular.

Pros and cons

  • Fabulous sandy beach
  • Within easy reach of the spectacular Akamas Nature Reserve, the sparkling Blue Lagoon and Lara Bay, where green and loggerhead turtles return each year to lay their eggs.
  • Small selection of restaurants could become boring on a two-week stay

Family-run Tavernas Make Pissouri an Undiscovered Gem

An undiscovered gem although villas are being built so it may not remain so for much longer. With just two excellent hotels in Pissouri Bay, this resort has crystal clear waters, excellent water-sports and a Blue Flag beach flanked by golden limestone cliffs. Perched on top of the craggy mountain is the quaint white-washed Pissouri village with its narrow streets and a lively town square of family-run tavernas. Join locals during the evening for brandy sour.

Pros and Cons

  • Laid back, friendly restaurants
  • Quiet and peaceful
  • Close to a typical Cypriot village
  • May be too quiet and remote for some. Limassol and Paphos are a 40 minute drive away

Friendly Restaurants and Cafes in Polis

Polis is a medium-size friendly resort within easy reach of tiny authentic villages and the protected Akamas peninsular, which has only one hotel, the luxury Anassa. There is a good selection of bars and restaurants and traffic-free town centre. Polis town beach is large but rather wild

Pros and Cons

  • Small and friendly with good restaurants and cafes
  • The sea is rougher than on the east coast
  • An hour's drive from Paphos

Latchi Boasts the Best Fish and Great Watersports

This is a popular resort for water-sports and boating. Some of the island’s best fish restaurants, serving the traditional fish meze, are situated along its harbour. The Baths of Aphrodite are a short drive away.

Pros and Cons

  • Excellent fish restaurants and water-sports
  • Close to Akamas Nature Park
  • A long drive from Paphos

Troodos Mountain Villages

For family-run village inns and hotels in rustic mountain villages head to the Lefkarama Village Hotel in the Troodos foothills or the fabulous Linos Inn in Kakopetria, which has been beautifully restored and furnished and has one of the best restaurants on the island.

Pros and Cons

  • The ultimate retreat for a quiet holiday
  • Few amusements other than outdoor activities

Tochni

Mid way between Limassol and Larnaca, this village is ramshackle in appearance and in stark contrast to neighbouring Kalavasos, with its pristine white-washed houses, three restaurants and two coffee shops. The village store and a taverna are near the church and village square. Its narrow twisting streets are waiting to be explored as is the beautiful surrounding countryside. Governor’s Beach is a short drive away. A number of quaint renovated stone houses, some with plunge pools or whirlpools, can be booked through Cyprus Villages

Pros and Cons

  • A typical Cypriot village which provides an authentic experience
  • Quiet and peaceful
  • No tourist amenities so you have to drive everywhere
